Most Bass are roaming in open water relating to baitfish.
I am sure by now anglers have either heard or already throwing the A-rig. This bait has
swept the nation with a lot of controversy. Is it legal or not?? Well the answer is yes.
When fishing LOE all you see flying through the air out of every bass boat is the A-Rig.
Anglers are reporting much success on the rig. I can see this bait and presentation
working year around. The reason this rig works so well on LOE and other Southern
Illinois lakes is because of the thread fin shad.
This bread of shad tends to move off shore and bunch up in big balls. You will need a
good side imagining unit like Hummin Bird to locate the bait, the bass will usually be
right beneath the bait.
I have also noticed many anglers getting hung in every little brush pile and sometimes
losing their A-Rig. Well i will give you a solution.. We are taking the Super Swimmer Jr,
made by Bruiser Baits (bruiserbaits.com) and rigging it on the 1/8 oz Ledge Doctor,
made by LTB (www.ltbwarehouse.com) and hooking it to the A-Rig. The result is you
have a school of baitfish that you can cast a long way and bounce and work through
brush and grass!
My other baits of choice for this time of year is the 3/16 Ledge Doctor, made by LTB
(www.ltbwarehouse.com) rig it with your favorite soft plastic, i would use shades of
greens, like watermelon or green pumpkin.
Work chunk rock banks, bass are seeking crayfish also.
Crappie action has been pretty stable. We have been catching slabs from grass to brush
and in depth ranges of 3 to 15 foot.
1/8 oz jigs tipped with slider grubs and curly tails is my bait of choice. Keep your rod tip
down and make a slow retrieve.
Eventually your rod will load up.
Follow these presentations above and i will promise you will have success on the water.
The temps have been mild and bass and crappies have been very active.
I would also like to mention for you to tune into Time on the Water, set your DVR on
channel 665 on Direct tv at 9:30 Saturday mornings and you will find Frank Hyla and me
fishing Southern Illinois lakes like Lake of Egypt, Kinkaid and Cedar Lake.
Until then next time
